FAQ. - External Hard Drive

Q5. Why is only 465GB recognized by Windows from the 500GB external portable hard drive?
ANS.

In general, Windows system capacity algorithm is binary, physical hard disk capacity algorithm is decimal.
To take 500GB hard drive as an example:
500GB = 500,000,000,000 Bytes , 1024Byte = 1KB
500,000,000,000 /1024 = 488,281,250 KB , 1024KB= 1MB
488,281,250/1024 = 476,837.16 MB , 1024MB= 1GB,
476,837.16 /1024 = 465 GB
Therefore, the capacity of hard disk x 0.931 ≒ Windows shown capacity.
